Engine Repair & Diagnostics
An engine problem is where guessing gets expensive fastest. A misfire can be a coil, an injector, a vacuum leak or a failing head gasket — and those range from an hour of labour to an engine.
What you might be noticing
If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth having looked at.
- Check engine light, especially flashing
- Rough idle, stumble, or a misfire when cold
- White smoke from the exhaust, or a sweet smell
- Coolant level dropping with no puddle under the car
- Using oil between changes
- Ticking, knocking or rattling that changes with engine speed
- Overheating, or temperature climbing under load
We diagnose engines before we quote them. That means reading live data rather than just pulling codes, testing the system a code implicates rather than replacing the part it names, and — where the repair depends on something we cannot see yet — saying so before you commit to it.
Modern turbocharged engines fail in ways that do not match the old rules. Compression can look acceptable while coolant is entering a cylinder. Oil consumption can be a PCV problem or a turbo seal. The diagnostic path matters more than the parts list.
How we approach it
- 01
Verify the complaint
We reproduce the fault first. A fault we cannot see is one we cannot prove we fixed.
- 02
Scan and read live data
Codes point at a system, not a part. Fuel trims and misfire counts narrow it down.
- 03
Test what the code implicates
Pressure tests, leak-down, smoke testing — whatever actually proves the cause.
- 04
Report before you commit
What we found, what it means, and where the repair could still change once something comes apart.
Pricing
We quote this work once we have seen the vehicle. The same job can differ a lot between model years and conditions, and we would rather give you a real number than a low one we have to walk back at the counter. Call and we will tell you what diagnosis costs and what the realistic range looks like.
Every repair backed by our 24 month / 24,000 mile warranty
Prices are pre-tax and cover the work described. Anything we find that changes the job gets discussed with you before it happens.
Common questions
Can you tell me what an engine repair costs over the phone?
Usually not honestly. The same symptom can be a two-hundred-dollar repair or an engine, and the difference is often invisible until something is apart. We will tell you what diagnosis costs and what the realistic range looks like once we know more.
My compression test was fine — does that rule out a head gasket?
No. On some engines coolant can enter a cylinder without compression numbers looking wrong. Cooling-system pressure testing and physically inspecting the cylinder are what actually settle it.
Why does diagnosis cost money if you are doing the repair anyway?
Because diagnosis is the work. Finding out what is actually wrong takes time, equipment and experience, and it is the part that stops you paying for a repair that does not fix the problem. We tell you the diagnostic fee up front.
Is a check engine light urgent?
A steady light usually means get it looked at soon. A flashing light means stop driving — that generally indicates a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, and continuing turns a moderate repair into an expensive one.
Is it worth repairing an engine on an older vehicle?
Sometimes, sometimes not. It depends on what the rest of the vehicle is like, what it is worth, and what you plan to do with it. We will give you our honest read rather than assuming you want the bigger job.
Do you replace engines, or only repair them?
Both. On some failures a replacement long block is genuinely the better outcome, because it ends the uncertainty about parts of the original engine you cannot inspect. We will explain which situation you are in and why.
