Transmission & Drivetrain Repair
Transmission complaints get misdiagnosed constantly, because a shudder, a flare or a clunk can come from the transmission, the driveline, the mounts or the torque converter.
What you might be noticing
If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth having looked at.
- Shudder or vibration at steady cruising speed
- Harsh, delayed or flaring shifts
- Clunk when selecting drive or reverse
- Whine or hum that changes with road speed
- Fluid leak, or fluid that smells burnt
- Warning light with a transmission or drivetrain code
We start by establishing where the fault actually is. A vibration that changes with road speed is a different problem from one that changes with engine speed, and that single distinction rules out most possibilities before anything comes apart.
Fluid condition, adaptive learning, and whether the vehicle has ever had the correct fluid in it all matter. Some shift complaints genuinely are a relearn or a fluid service. Others are internal. We would rather find out which before selling you the expensive one.
How we approach it
- 01
Road test with the fault present
Road speed versus engine speed tells us where to look first.
- 02
Fluid and adaptive data
Condition, level, and what the transmission has learned about itself.
- 03
Isolate driveline from transmission
Mounts, joints, carrier bearings and axles ruled in or out before internals are discussed.
- 04
Give you the honest range
Including when a rebuilt or replacement unit is the right answer rather than chasing it.
Pricing
We quote this work once we have seen the vehicle. The same job can differ a lot between model years and conditions, and we would rather give you a real number than a low one we have to walk back at the counter. Call and we will tell you what diagnosis costs and what the realistic range looks like.
Every repair backed by our 24 month / 24,000 mile warranty
Prices are pre-tax and cover the work described. Anything we find that changes the job gets discussed with you before it happens.
Common questions
Is a shudder always the transmission?
No, and this is the most common misdiagnosis we see. A vibration that changes with road speed is usually driveline. One that changes with engine speed is more likely the torque converter or mounts. Establishing which comes first, before anything comes apart.
Do I need a transmission flush?
Only if the vehicle calls for a fluid service and the fluid is due or in poor condition. A flush is not a repair, and on a transmission that is already damaged it will not fix anything. We check condition and the manufacturer schedule rather than selling it as routine.
Can a transmission problem be fixed with a software update?
Occasionally, yes. Some shift-quality complaints are genuinely addressed by an updated calibration or an adaptive relearn. It is worth ruling that out before discussing internal repair.
How much is a transmission?
It ranges enormously depending on whether you need a repair, a rebuild or a replacement unit, and which transmission it is. We would rather diagnose it and give you a real number than quote a range so wide it is useless.
Is it safe to keep driving with a slipping transmission?
Generally no. Slipping generates heat, and heat is what destroys transmissions. Continuing to drive often turns a repairable fault into a replacement.
