Ford Escape Service & Repair
The Escape is a common vehicle with some very specific known failure patterns, particularly around the EcoBoost engines and the cooling system.
A lot of Escape work is ordinary: brakes, suspension, maintenance. The jobs worth being careful about are the engine ones, where Ford has published service information about coolant intrusion on certain 2.0L EcoBoost applications.
If yours is losing coolant with nothing on the ground, that is worth diagnosing properly rather than topping up — the difference between a straightforward repair and an engine is often invisible until the head comes off.

- 2019 Fusion
2019 Fusion — severe steering rack corrosion, outside the recall
- Complaint
- Brought in for inspection. Steering-gear area showing corrosion well beyond the surface rust normal on a New England car of this age.
- Diagnosis
- Severe corrosion around the steering gear and motor attachment area. Ford recall 19S26 covers motor attachment bolt corrosion on certain 2013–2016 Fusion and MKZ — this 2019 is outside that population and does not qualify for the recall. We have not established that the failure mechanism is identical, and we are not claiming it is. What we can say is that the corrosion on this car is real and it is on a later vehicle than the ones Ford named.
- Repair
- Assessment ongoing. Documented here because a Fusion owner asking whether a later car can corrode deserves to see one rather than be told it is not covered by a recall.
- 2017 Escape
2017 Escape 2.0 EcoBoost — coolant in cylinder 3
- Complaint
- Coolant level dropping with nothing on the ground, a misfire that was worst on a cold start, and white smoke from the exhaust.
- Diagnosis
- Cooling system pressure-tested cold and would not hold. No external leak at any hose, the radiator, the pump or the housings. Plugs out and a physical inspection confirmed coolant entering cylinder 3 — which establishes where it is going, not yet what is damaged. Compression readings were not the thing that settled it; the inspection was.
- Repair
- In progress. The decision between a head-gasket repair and a long block depends on the condition of the block deck and bore bridges, and that is genuinely not knowable until the head is off. We will update this record and the article with what we actually find rather than with what we expect.

Common questions
My Escape is losing coolant but there is no leak. What is that?
On some EcoBoost engines coolant can enter a cylinder rather than leaking out. It needs cooling-system pressure testing and a physical look inside the cylinder to confirm. We have written up what Ford documented and what we found on a real 2017 Escape in our knowledge base.
Is the coolant intrusion issue a recall?
No. Ford published service information telling technicians how to repair the condition when a vehicle meets its criteria. That is not a safety recall and it does not automatically mean the repair is covered. Whether your specific vehicle qualifies is a VIN question for a Ford dealer.
Does this affect the 1.5 EcoBoost as well?
Different engine, different guidance. The 1.5 has its own documented coolant-intrusion concerns and Ford published separate service information for it. Do not apply the 2.0 guidance to a 1.5.
Should I avoid buying a used EcoBoost Escape?
Not necessarily, but have it inspected before you buy, and check the coolant level and history specifically. A pre-purchase inspection on one of these is money well spent.
Is the 2.5 non-turbo Escape a simpler car to own?
Mechanically, yes — no turbocharger, no intercooling, less plumbing. It is slower and less economical in return. Both need servicing to specification.
