What you might be noticing
- Coolant level dropping with no obvious external leak
- Coolant seeping from the engine drain or weep area
- Overheating, or temperature climbing under load
- Coolant smell after driving
- Low coolant warning where equipped
- Milky or contaminated engine oil in a severe internal leak
How we diagnose it
- Pressure test the cooling system — Held cold, to establish whether it holds pressure at all and where it is going.
- Rule out every external source first — Hoses, radiator, housings and heater core. It would be an expensive mistake to open an engine for a leaking hose.
- Check the weep area — This pump is designed to leak where you can find it before it leaks where you cannot. That evidence is the tell.
- Inspect the engine oil — Whether coolant has reached the crankcase changes the entire conversation, because that damage is not fixed by a pump.
- Assess the timing components while access exists — Not because a procedure demands it, but because they are right there and getting back in costs the same hours all over again.
Someone tells you the water pump has gone and quotes a number that sounds like a transmission. On most vehicles that would be a reason to get a second opinion. On this one it is worth understanding why before you assume you are being taken advantage of.
Where Ford put the pump
On the 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 in the transverse Explorer, the water pump is not bolted to the outside of the engine where you can reach it with a socket set. It sits behind the engine front cover and is driven by the timing chain. Ford’s own service procedure for accessing it involves removing the front cover and timing components.
That single design decision is the whole story. The part itself is unremarkable. Getting to it is a major engine job.
Why an internal pump failing is worse than an external one
An external pump that fails makes a mess on your driveway and possibly leaves you stranded. Unpleasant, but the coolant goes on the ground where you can see it.
An internal pump has somewhere else to go. In a severe failure, coolant can end up in the crankcase, mixed with the oil that is supposed to be protecting the bearings. That turns a bad day into a different category of repair, and it is why we check the oil condition before we quote anything.
This is not a recall
To be direct about it: there is no Ford safety recall that provides free replacement of Explorer internal water pumps. If you have read otherwise, it was wrong. This is a design characteristic and a wear item, and it is customer-pay work outside of any applicable warranty.
The decision you actually have to make
The one that matters is not whether to replace the pump — if it has failed, it is going to be replaced. It is what else to do while the engine is open.
We will not tell you that every timing component must be replaced, because that depends on the procedure being used and, more honestly, on what we find when we get in there. What we will tell you is the labour arithmetic: the hours to reach these parts are the same whether you touch them now or in two years. Making that decision with the cover off, based on actual condition, is a lot cheaper than making it twice.
Catching it early
Unexplained coolant loss on one of these is worth diagnosing rather than topping up. The difference between a pump replacement and a pump replacement plus the consequences of coolant in the oil is measured in thousands, and it is mostly a function of how long it ran that way.
