How we diagnose it
- Test the battery and charging system properly first — Load test and voltage drop. A genuinely failed battery looks identical from the driver seat and has to be ruled out before anything else.
- Let the modules go to sleep — Modern vehicles stay awake for a long time after lock-up. Measuring before they sleep produces a number that means nothing.
- Measure key-off current draw — Against what the vehicle should be drawing once asleep, not against a rule of thumb.
- Identify what is waking the network — Scan-tool network data and fuse isolation where appropriate — the goal is the cause, not just the circuit.
- Check Ford service information for known causes — Some of these are documented, which turns days of tracing into an afternoon.
The pattern is familiar. Battery dies, gets replaced, works for a while, dies again. By the third one it is obvious the battery was never the problem, but knowing that does not tell you what is.
What "going to sleep" means on a modern truck
An F-150 is a network of modules talking to each other. When you lock it and walk away they do not switch off — they finish what they are doing, then progressively shut down until the vehicle is drawing only what it needs to listen for the key.
That process takes considerably longer than most people expect. It is why measuring draw two minutes after locking the doors gives you a large number that means nothing at all, and why a proper diagnosis takes time rather than a quick meter reading.
One component can hold everything awake
This is the part worth understanding, because it explains why the cause is so often somewhere unexpected. Ford SSM 47755 documents 2018 F-150 and Expedition with a discharged battery, where an internally shorted electronic parking brake switch woke the ABS module, which in turn woke the CAN network, producing continued draw and a flat battery.

The general lesson matters more than the specific fault: on a networked vehicle, the component causing the drain and the component consuming the current are frequently not the same thing.
Why this is not a parts-swapping job
Every step of the real diagnosis is measurement. Confirm the battery is genuinely sound and the charging system is working. Let the modules sleep. Measure the draw against what it should be. Identify what is waking the network, using scan-tool data and fuse isolation where it helps. Check whether Ford has already documented this exact cause.
None of that is glamorous and all of it takes time, which is why an honest parasitic draw diagnosis is quoted by time. What it avoids is the alternative: buying a battery, then an alternator, then a module, and still parking a truck that will be dead on Monday.
What helps us find it faster
Tell us the pattern. Does it die every night or only some? After short trips or long ones? Did anything get installed recently — a dash camera, a remote starter, a trailer brake controller, a tracker? Aftermarket accessories wired to a permanent live are a common enough cause that ruling them in or out early is worth doing.
