What you might be noticing
- A/C gradually stops cooling over weeks or months
- System low on refrigerant when tested
- Cools properly after a recharge, then fades again
- Repeated loss of refrigerant with no obvious leak underhood
- Poor A/C performance that is worst on hot days
How we diagnose it
- Measure performance before adding anything — Vent temperature and system pressures. Adding refrigerant first destroys the evidence.
- Find the leak — Dye and electronic detection. Underhood components are easier to reach, so they get ruled out first.
- Test the evaporator specifically — It sits inside the HVAC housing, so a leak there produces no visible underhood evidence at all.
- Confirm before committing — This is a substantial interior repair, so the diagnosis needs to be right before the dash comes apart.
The story is nearly always the same. The air conditioning got weak, somebody recharged it, it was cold again, and everyone moved on. Then a few months later it is warm once more. By the second or third recharge it is obvious something is actually wrong.
Refrigerant does not get used up
This is the bit worth being blunt about. An air conditioning system is sealed. Refrigerant is not a consumable like oil or brake pads — it does not deplete with use. If a system is low, it leaked, and it will keep leaking.
A recharge on a leaking system is not a repair. It is a temporary measure that also vents refrigerant into the atmosphere, and on a car with a known leak location it is money spent on a countdown.
Why the evaporator is the awkward one
Most A/C leaks are findable. Condensers sit at the front and get hit by road debris. Hoses and fittings are visible with the hood open. Compressor seals leave evidence.
The evaporator is different because it lives inside the HVAC housing, behind the dashboard. A leak there produces no puddle, no oily residue underhood, nothing to see. The system simply goes low again, which is exactly why these cars get recharged repeatedly before anyone works out what is happening.
What Ford documented
Ford issued TSB 18-2256 covering poor A/C performance on 2015, 2016 and 2017 Mustangs where diagnosis confirms refrigerant leaking from the evaporator, with the direction to replace it.
There is a detail in that bulletin worth noticing: Ford changed the service strategy so the evaporator could be serviced separately from the complete climate-control housing, and listed evaporator service kits for the 2.3L, 3.7L, 5.0L and 5.2L engines. Manufacturers make that kind of change when enough vehicles need the repair to justify making it less painful.
What the repair actually involves
Ford’s published labour allowances of roughly 4.9 to 5.4 hours depending on year and transmission give you the shape of it. Getting to the evaporator means dismantling a significant amount of interior, and that is most of the cost.
It also means doing it properly on the way back: refrigerant and oil to the correct charge, new seals and O-rings, and replacing the one-time-use hardware Ford calls out rather than reusing it. Having the dash apart twice is nobody’s idea of a good outcome.
Before you spend anything
Get the leak confirmed. If it is the condenser or a hose, that is a far smaller job and worth knowing. If it is the evaporator, at least you are deciding with real information instead of buying another can of refrigerant every spring.
