How we diagnose it
- Confirm the vehicle’s field action and calibration status — Before anything mechanical. Some behaviour is addressed by an updated calibration, and knowing what has already been applied changes the path.
- Run the clutch shudder diagnostic procedure — Ford has a defined routine and shudder data to review. This is where the difference between a clutch problem and something else gets established.
- Check for input shaft seal leakage — The DPS6 runs dry clutches. Fluid reaching them changes the diagnosis and means a seal repair, not just a clutch.
- Complete the required adaptive procedures — Ford is explicit that clearing adaptive strategy without finishing the full routines can itself cause erratic shifting — so a half-done relearn creates the next complaint.
The complaint is almost always the same. Pulling away from a light the car shakes, sometimes badly enough that passengers ask about it. Once you are moving it goes away. Nothing is obviously broken, the car drives, and every shop has an opinion.
The DPS6 is not a normal automatic
This is the single most important thing to understand about it. There is no torque converter and no fluid coupling smoothing out engagement. The DPS6 uses two dry clutches, operated automatically — closer to a robot working a manual gearbox than to a traditional automatic.
That design is why it shudders rather than slipping quietly, and why the fixes are clutch-and-calibration shaped rather than the fluid-and-solenoid work people expect from an automatic.
What Ford documented
Ford issued a bulletin covering excessive clutch shudder, judder on take-off and erratic shifts on certain Focus and Fiesta vehicles, along with transmission fluid found in the clutch housing on some of them. The diagnostic direction is specific: confirm field-action and calibration status first, run the defined shudder procedure, review the data, check for leakage, and complete the required adaptive routines.
That last instruction carries a warning worth repeating. Ford states that clearing adaptive strategy without completing the full required routines can itself produce erratic shifting and drivability complaints. In other words, a partial job does not leave the car where it started — it can leave it worse.
Why fluid in the clutch housing matters
These clutches are meant to be dry. If an input shaft seal is leaking, fluid reaches a friction surface designed to work without it, and no amount of adaptive learning fixes that. Where leakage is confirmed the seal is part of the repair, not an optional extra — otherwise the new clutches get contaminated the same way the old ones did.
The honest conversation about whether it is worth it
These are not expensive cars, and a clutch job is not a small bill. We will tell you what it needs and what it costs, and we will say plainly when we think the money is better spent elsewhere. What we will not do is take a repair we do not believe in.
It is also worth checking coverage before you spend anything. Ford has run programs relating to this transmission, and eligibility depends on the specific vehicle rather than the model year — a five-minute call to a dealer with your VIN is worth making first.
